MyConstruct Studio can connect to AI assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code (GitHub Copilot) using MCP, the Model Context Protocol. Once connected, you can ask questions about your jobs, clients, tasks, invoices and costs in plain English, and, where your company has it switched on, have the assistant make changes for you after you've checked them. The assistant always works as you, with your permissions.
Before you start
You need:
- a Studio subscription with API access included, and
- a MyConstruct user with API Access switched on. Admins have it automatically; for other staff, an admin sets it in Manage Staff permissions.
Some features depend on your company's setup. AI assistants making changes, the ready-made prompts and "sign in with MyConstruct" for AI apps are only available where your company has them switched on. If you're not sure, contact MyConstruct support.
Copy your MCP address
- Sign in to your Studio site.
- In the top-right header, click SETTINGS (the gear icon), then choose Business Details.
- Click the API Access tab. It opens on the Connect sub-tab.
- In the Connect an AI assistant card, click Copy next to the MCP address. It follows the pattern
https://api-<your-studio>.myconstruct.com/mcp.
Not showing API access is on in the top-right corner? See API access and tokens in MyConstruct Studio.
Sign in, or use an access token?
Any assistant that supports remote MCP servers can connect, including Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code (GitHub Copilot). Menu names change between versions of these apps, so if something doesn't match exactly, check the assistant's own help pages. Detailed guides for each are linked from the Connect card.
There are two ways to connect:
| Sign in with MyConstruct | Access token | |
|---|---|---|
| How | The assistant opens a MyConstruct sign-in page. You sign in, check the access the app asks for and click Allow access. | You create a token on the Access tokens sub-tab and put it in the assistant's settings. |
| Best for | Chat apps: Claude, ChatGPT | Developer tools that let you set a header: Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code |
| What it can do | What the app asked for and you allowed | Set on the token: Read only or Read/write |
| Ends when | You or an admin disconnect it, or 30 days after it was last used | The token expires or is revoked |
Sign-in is only available where your company has it switched on. If your assistant says it can't find a sign-in page, connect with an access token instead, or contact MyConstruct support.
Add MyConstruct to your assistant
Claude (claude.ai and Claude Desktop)
You need a Claude plan that includes custom connectors.
- In Claude, open Settings › Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
- Enter Name:
MyConstructand URL: your MCP address (https://api-<your-studio>.myconstruct.com/mcp). Leave the OAuth fields under Advanced settings empty, because Claude registers itself with MyConstruct. - Choose Add, then Connect.
- A MyConstruct sign-in page opens. Sign in, check the access Claude asks for and click Allow access.
- In a chat, open the + menu, then Connectors, and switch MyConstruct on.
On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner usually adds the connector for the whole organisation first. Then each person connects with their own MyConstruct login.
ChatGPT
Custom apps use ChatGPT's Developer mode. Which plans include it changes over time, so check your ChatGPT settings.
- In ChatGPT, open Settings › Apps › Advanced settings and switch on Developer mode.
- Back in Settings › Apps, choose Create.
- Enter Name:
MyConstruct, MCP server URL: your MCP address, and Authentication: OAuth. Tick that you trust the app, then choose Create. - A MyConstruct sign-in page opens. Sign in, check the access ChatGPT asks for and click Allow access.
- In a new chat, open the + menu, choose Developer mode (under More) and switch on MyConstruct.
Claude Code
In a terminal:
claude mcp add --transport http myconstruct https://api-<your-studio>.myconstruct.com/mcp
Then in Claude Code run /mcp, choose myconstruct and Authenticate, and sign in in your browser. To use an access token instead, add --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN" to the command. Don't put tokens in a project's shared .mcp.json that's committed to git.
Cursor
Add MyConstruct to your global ~/.cursor/mcp.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"myconstruct": {
"url": "https://api-<your-studio>.myconstruct.com/mcp"
}
}
}
Cursor shows MyConstruct under Settings › MCP with a sign-in button. To use an access token instead, keep it in an environment variable (for example MYCONSTRUCT_TOKEN) and add "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${env:MYCONSTRUCT_TOKEN}" }.
VS Code (GitHub Copilot)
Run MCP: Open User Configuration from the Command Palette and add:
{
"servers": {
"myconstruct": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://api-<your-studio>.myconstruct.com/mcp"
}
}
}
VS Code opens a MyConstruct sign-in page the first time. (Note the key is servers, not mcpServers.) For a token, use an inputs entry with "password": true so VS Code asks for it once and stores it securely.
Any other assistant
Give it your MCP address. If it supports sign-in (OAuth), sign in and allow access. Otherwise send an access token as the header Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN.
To create an access token, see API access and tokens in MyConstruct Studio.
Signing in and approving access
When you connect with sign-in, MyConstruct shows its own sign-in page, not the assistant's:
- It names the app and says it wants to access your MyConstruct company data as you, with your permissions, then lists the access it's asking for, such as View your company's data and, where changes are switched on, Create, change and delete your company's data.
- Enter your MyConstruct Username, Password and, if you use MFA, your Authentication code.
- Check the access the app asks for and click Allow access, or Deny if anything looks wrong.
"This app hasn't been verified by MyConstruct" appears for apps that registered themselves, which is normal for most AI assistants. Only allow it if you started the connection yourself, from an app you trust.
The connection lasts until it's disconnected, or 30 days after it was last used. It stops straight away if your MyConstruct account is disabled.
Try it
Ask in plain English, for example:
- "What's outstanding on the Smith Residence job?"
- "Which invoices are more than 30 days overdue?"
- "Give me the week ahead for my jobs."
- "Add a note to job 1042: slab poured today, no issues." (only where changes are switched on)
Ready-made prompts. Where your company has them switched on, MyConstruct adds ready-made requests to the assistant's prompt or slash-command menu (in Claude, the + menu; in Claude Code and VS Code, type /):
| Prompt | What it does |
|---|---|
| Job status update | A short update for one job: where it's up to, what's outstanding or overdue, and what's next. Internal wording, or plain client wording without costs or internal notes. |
| Overdue invoices | Unpaid invoices past due, totalled by client, with a draft reminder for each. Nothing is sent. |
| The week ahead | Calendar, tasks due and overdue work for the next 7 days, for you or the whole team. |
| Job cost check | Budget against committed and billed costs for a job, flagging cost centres over or close to budget. |
| Sales pipeline review | Open opportunities, highlighting the ones that have gone quiet. |
| Import a price list or price rise | Brings a supplier's price list into your catalogue as new dated prices: preview, check with you, then apply. Needs change access. |
| Site diary note | Turns rough site notes into a tidy job note, shows it to you, and adds it once you approve. Needs change access. |
You only see the prompts you have access to. For example, someone without access to invoices won't see Overdue invoices.
What an AI assistant can and can't do
The assistant is you. It sees and changes only what your MyConstruct login can. If you can't see invoices on screen, the assistant can't either. Each company's data is kept separate.
Look things up (every connection):
| In plain words | Tool name |
|---|---|
| Find a client, supplier, job or opportunity by name, number, address, email or phone | search |
| List jobs, or get one job's full picture: client, recent notes, contacts, estimates, outstanding checklist tasks and file count |
list_jobs, get_job_overview
|
| Open or lost sales opportunities; a client with their jobs and opportunities |
list_opportunities, get_client
|
| Checklist and to-do tasks, including overdue ones | list_tasks |
| Invoices by status, job, client, paid or due date | list_invoices |
| A job's costs: budget, committed, billed and remaining by cost centre | get_job_costs |
| Timesheets and calendar events between two dates |
list_timesheets, list_calendar_events
|
| A job's files and photos | list_job_files |
| An inventory item and all its dated prices | get_item_prices |
| Any other record (quotes, variations, estimates, orders, assets, licences and more) |
get_record, list_records
|
Make changes (only where your company has them switched on, and only with change access):
- add notes to jobs and opportunities (job notes are staff-only; the client never sees them)
- create and update clients, opportunities and jobs (including marking an opportunity lost or reopening it)
- create tasks, tick off or update checklist tasks, log time and add calendar events
- import a spreadsheet: inventory items, prices, cost centres, suppliers, clients, jobs, tasks or checklists
- raise prices for a supplier, cost centre or work type by a percentage or amount, as new dated prices (the old prices stay in the history)
Imports and price rises always preview first. The assistant shows you what each row would do and waits for your OK before anything is saved. Nothing is imported unless every row is valid.
Built-in safety:
- You stay in control. MyConstruct tells assistants to confirm with you before changing anything, and most assistants ask before using a tool that makes a change. Read what it's going to do before you agree.
- Read only means read only. With a read-only token the assistant can't change anything. It will tell you, and the attempt is recorded as Refused in AI activity.
- Every change is logged in AI activity, which admins and managers can see.
- A speed limit. Each connection can make up to 120 changes an hour.
- Hidden instructions are ignored. Notes, emails and file names are written by people, including clients and suppliers. MyConstruct tells assistants to treat that text as information, never as instructions.
- Big answers are trimmed. If a request returns too much, the assistant is asked to narrow it down (for example, a date range or a status).
The MCP reference lists every tool, prompt and resource, generated straight from MyConstruct's code. Open it from Developer docs.
Keeping an eye on AI assistants (admins and managers)
Connected apps
The Connected apps sub-tab lists every AI assistant or other app that someone in your business has connected by signing in with MyConstruct. For each one you'll see:
- the app name, tagged Verified (registered by MyConstruct) or Unverified (the app registered itself, which is normal for AI assistants), and the app's website where it gave one
- Signed in as: the person who connected it
- Access: Read only or Read & change
- Connected and Last used dates
- a Disconnect button
To disconnect an app: click Disconnect and confirm ("Disconnect [app] for [person]? It stops working straight away; they can connect it again later."). You'll see "App disconnected." Click Refresh to update the list.
Note: Connections made with an access token don't appear here. They're on the Access tokens sub-tab, where you stop them by revoking the token.
AI activity
The AI activity sub-tab is the record of every change an AI assistant made for your people, and every attempt that was refused. Each row shows:
- When it happened
- App: the assistant's name, or Personal access token for token connections
- For: the person it acted for
- What it did, in plain words, e.g. "Created job no. 32 for client id 12939" or "Imported inventory-items (rows 1: 1 new, 0 changed…)"
- Record: which job, client or other record it touched
Refused attempts are tagged Not done, for example "Refused (read-only token): add a job note, job id 13449", or an import that had errors. Tick Refused only to see just those.
The list shows 25 at a time, newest first. Use Newer and Older to page through, and Refresh to update it.
Good to know: AI activity records changes, not look-ups. Questions an assistant answers by reading data aren't listed here.
Staying safe
A token or connected app is a key to your business data, so treat it like one.
- Read only first. Only use Read/write, or allow changes, when you really need the tool to change data.
- Check before you agree. When an assistant says what it's about to change, read it before you approve.
- Short expiries. Set the shortest sensible expiry and put a reminder in your calendar to rotate it.
- One token per integration, with a clear name, so revoking one doesn't break anything else.
- Never paste tokens into chats, shared docs, emails or tickets, including AI chat windows. Use the tool's secure credentials field or a password manager.
- Revoke or disconnect straight away if something leaks or someone leaves.
- Review regularly: check Last used on Access tokens, and (admins and managers) Connected apps and AI activity. Revoke or disconnect anything you don't recognise.
- Keep change access for people and assistants you trust. Notes and emails from clients and suppliers can contain text that tries to give an assistant instructions. MyConstruct tells assistants to ignore it, but it's another reason to stay careful.
Troubleshooting
The assistant can't find a sign-in page
- Sign-in for AI apps may not be switched on for your company. Connect with a read-only access token instead (see API access and tokens in MyConstruct Studio), or contact support.
- Check you pasted the MCP address (ending in
/mcp) exactly as copied from the Connect sub-tab.
The assistant says it can't make a change
- "This token is read-only": the connection only has read access. Use a Read/write token, or let the app ask for change access, if you really want it to make changes.
- The change tools aren't there at all: changes may not be switched on for your company, or you may not have edit access to that area in MyConstruct.
- "…made 120 changes in the last hour": the hourly limit. Try again later.
A tool or prompt is missing
The assistant only gets tools and prompts for areas you can access. For example, without access to invoices there's no invoice tool or Overdue invoices prompt. Ask your admin about your permissions.
The assistant stopped working
- An admin or manager may have disconnected it under Connected apps, the token may have expired or been revoked, or a sign-in connection wasn't used for 30 days. Connect again.
- Cursor ignoring your token header: some Cursor versions try sign-in instead. Use sign-in, or update Cursor.
API access is off, or Access Result isn't "Ready"
- Subscription API disabled: your Studio subscription needs API access. Contact MyConstruct support.
- User API disabled: ask your admin to switch on API Access in your staff permissions.
- Click Check access again after any change.
